11=head1 INTRODUCTION
12
13Perl history in brief, by Larry Wall:
14

GS
15 Perl 0 introduced Perl to my officemates.
16 Perl 1 introduced Perl to the world, and changed /\(...\|...\)/ to
d516a115 17 /(...|...)/. \(Dan Faigin still hasn't forgiven me. :-\)
cac726e9
NIS
18 Perl 2 introduced Henry Spencer's regular expression package.
19 Perl 3 introduced the ability to handle binary data (embedded nulls).
20 Perl 4 introduced the first Camel book. Really. We mostly just
d516a115 21 switched version numbers so the book could refer to 4.000.
cac726e9 22 Perl 5 introduced everything else, including the ability to
d516a115 23 introduce everything else.

40=for disclaimer orking cows is hazardous, and not legal in all jurisdictions
41
cac726e9
NIS
42Chip Salzenberg gets credit for that, with a nod to his cow orker,
43David Croy. We had passed around various names (baton, token, hot
44potato) but none caught on. Then, Chip asked:
45
46[begin quote]
47
48 Who has the patch pumpkin?
49
1fce104d 50To explain: David Croy once told me that at a previous job,
cac726e9
NIS
51there was one tape drive and multiple systems that used it for backups.
52But instead of some high-tech exclusion software, they used a low-tech
53method to prevent multiple simultaneous backups: a stuffed pumpkin.
54No one was allowed to make backups unless they had the "backup pumpkin".
55
56[end quote]
57
58The name has stuck. The holder of the pumpkin is sometimes called
193fb0af
GS
59the pumpking (keeping the source afloat?) or the pumpkineer (pulling
60the strings?).

927=head3 The patch-free era
928
929In more modern times, named releases don't come as often, and as progress
930can be followed (nearly) instantly (with rsync, and since late 2008, git)
931patches between versions are no longer provided. However, that doesn't
75ae21a0 932keep us from calculating how large a patch could have been. Which is
ee4d0b42
A
933shown in the table below. Unless noted otherwise, the size mentioned is
934the patch to bring version x.y.z to x.y.z+1.
